Flower for Jean-Jacques
It takes a special strength of character (and perhaps
a few ordinarily undesirable psychological characteristics) to lead men and
women through vicious battles, particularly when these are against an enemy
who is too racist to honor peace agreements made with Black men that this
enemy considers inferior. No one can erase the historical fact that General
Jean-Jacques Dessalines led the army that ultimately gave Napoleon his first
and perhaps most humiliating military defeat. Indeed it was Napoleon's desperate
effort to avert this defeat that caused France to sell the huge territory
known as the "Louisiana Purchase" to the US at a fire sale price.
Whatever he endured as he grew up, and whatever that quality was that allowed
Dessalines to become such a vital part of one of the world's most important
historical events, that is what is honored here.
