Flower for Liu
Dedicated To

China's culture is an ancient one that reinvented itself with the modern Chinese revolution. The icons of that revolution inspired others all over the world. Today, the icons are downplayed but the reality that this revolution made possible will dominate the planet's future for the foreseeable future! Both the reality that was and the icon that is Liu Hulan are fine examples of cultural representations of historical facts. It is not surprising that she became the subject of an opera. Liu Hulan was only 13 when she joined the Communist Party in her village. A year later, Kuomintang soldiers invaded her village after a collaborator had been assassinated. Like reactionaries everywhere, they rounded up every possible suspected member of the revolutionary party. They gave the now 14 year-old Liu a chance to renounce the Communist Party before she was decapitated. She refused and thus became immortal.
