Flower for Essie
Dedicated To

Essie Robeson was an internationally known activist, author, anthropologist and tireless enemy of colonialism and racism. She was the devoted partner of the actor and activist Paul Robeson and she endured his extra-marital relationships. She earned a Ph.D. in Anthropology in 1946 and published a book AFRICAN JOURNEY that dared to suggest that Blacks in the US should be proud of their African heritage. Like her husband Paul she was active in the Council on African Affairs. She was also harassed by the infamous McCarthy witchhunts and her passport was confiscated for many years. In 1958, she was a delegate to the historic All-African Peoples' Conference in Ghana. She died in 1965 from breast cancer at the age of 69.
