Flower for Sammy
Dedicated To

Author and activist James Forman wrote a book about Sammy that ought to be required reading for the middle class African-American youth who now take their "All-Access" lives for granted. Sammy was a 21 year-old veteran attending Tuskegee institute. He joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to help register voters and integrate lunch counters. On January 3, 1966 he chose to use the "White 0only" restroom at a Standard Oil gas station in Tuskegee, Alabama. He was shot to death by the White gas station attendant and became the first African-American university student to die in the Civil Rights Struggle.
